High-Impact Practices and Third Spaces: Connecting across Disciplines
From Amy Cicchino‘s LinkedIn post
The closing article in the ePortfolios Across the Disciplines special issue is “High-Impact Practices and Third Spaces: Connecting across Disciplines” by Morgan Gresham, Megan Mize, and Sarah Zurhellen from AAEEBL – Association for Authentic, Experiential, and Evidence-Based Learning‘s Digital Ethics Task Force.
The authors argue that third space professionals—positions that blur academic and nonacademic employment categories― are often important laborers in efforts to promote high-impact practices, including ePortfolios, yet their positions often do not encourage them to engage in scholarship, leaving their voices underrepresented in the literature.
Specifically, the article discusses how a coalition made up by many third space professionals came together to develop AAEEBL’s Digital Ethics in ePortfolios principles. The authors paired that work with research to map the presence and labor tasks of third space professionals.
As a third space professional myself, I am grateful that this article takes a strength-based approach to describing the work these folks do as they connect multi-disciplinary constituents in achieving shared goals for student and faculty success.
