In this blended (dual delivery) workshop, Christine Slade, Megan Mize and Sarah Zurhellen will introduce participants to the ‘Principle of Labour Visibility’: in what ways are work, time, and effort invisible and unrewarded as it relates to eportfolio practitioners and creators?
By first introducing and situating the principle as critical to eportfolio projects, we intend to engage participants in a lively discussion about what constitutes work in the ePortfolio space, how they conduct and conceive of that work, how they’re recognised and/or compensated for that work, and how we, as a field, can develop and maintain ethical expectations for the labour of eportfolio practitioners and creators.
Christine contributes to UQ’s priorities in assessment and academic integrity, with leadership responsibilities in the implementation of the University’s first Academic Integrity Action Plan, membership of the UQ Assessment Sub-Committee and Chair of the UQ Assessment Working Party. She was a member of the TEQSA-funded team of experts who delivered national academic integrity workshops, under the leadership of Professor Tracey Bretag, and the accompanying toolkit of resources.
Christine holds a PhD critiquing institutional capacity to address complex challenges, and a postgraduate qualification in academic practice. In May 2018, Christine was recognised as a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), UK, for sustained strategic impact on teaching and learning at inter/national and institutional levels.
Christine’s research interests include digital pedagogies, assessment and ethics. She is a member of the UQ Digital Health Network sponsored by the Global Change Institute, the organising committee for the Australian ePortfolio Forum and webinars, and the international Association of Authentic, Experiential and Evidence-based Learning Digital Ethics Taskforce. Christine enjoys working with undergraduate students in short-term teaching and learning research projects.
Megan Mize earned her PhD in English Studies from Old Dominion University where she is the Director for ePortfolios and Digital Initiatives in the Academic Success Center (ASC). In this role, she creates, facilitates, and assesses faculty professional engagement opportunities, program design, and grant support/research for incorporating digital tools. Additionally, Megan designs and coordinates student support for multimodal composition. Finally, she collaborates with High Impact Practice partners throughout ODU, integrating ePortfolio practice into active learning opportunities.
Currently, her research interests include digital ethics and ePortfolio composition, extended reality (XR) use as an emerging high-impact practice, and GIFs as cultural and rhetorical artifacts. Her work appears in Peitho, Field Guide, and In Media Res.
Sarah Zurhellen completed her BA, BS, and MA degrees at Appalachian State and her PhD at the University of Missouri. She rejoined the AppState community in 2014 as a faculty member and is now the Assistant Director of the Writing Across the Curriculum Program and a Professional Consultant in the University Writing Center. She studies the impact of digital computing on language and the form of the novel and enjoys teaching, talking, and thinking about writing in all of its forms and functions.
She is also the primary WAC consultant for the following departments and colleges: Art, Biology, Chemistry & Fermentation Sciences, Computer Science, Geography & Planning, Geological & Environmental Sciences, Hayes College of Music, Mathematical Sciences, Physics & Astronomy, Theatre & Dance. In this virtual workshop. Christine Slade and Shari Bowker from the Institute of Teaching and Learning Innovation at the University of Queensland will provide a brief overview of how eportfolios can be used to support feedback uptake and self-regulated learning. The workshop will include facilitated group discussion about feedback challenges participants are facing, and then provide space in a small group environment to think about how we might incorporate new feedback opportunities in our own practice.

Shari is an experienced teacher who began working at The University of Queensland in 2011. Shari joined ITaLI in 2019 from the Office of Medical Education in the Faculty of Medicine.
Shari’s focus on portfolio pedagogies fosters assessment designs for student-driven learning and feedback uptake to encourage the development of reflective, self-regulated learners. She partners with colleagues within ITaLI and Faculties to map out the pedagogical purposes of using ePortfolios to capture students’ educational journeys and professional identity development. Her student-staff partnerships facilitate collaborative learning of how ePortfolios support digital identities and employability awareness from the student’s point of view.
Shari holds a Bachelor’s of Science and Bachelor’s of Education. She is currently studying an Master’s of Education focusing on inclusive educational practices.

Professor Gary Velan from UNSW Sydney will share how the MyEducation Portfolio is being used to showcase UNSW’s academic staff’s educational achievements to others and to reflect, grow and inspire their education practice.

Professor Gary Velan
Professor Gary Velan is an award-winning medical educator at UNSW Sydney. He is currently Senior Vice Dean (Education) in Medicine and co-Director of the UNSW Scientia Education Academy. Gary’s innovations include the introduction of online formative assessments to UNSW and the development of virtual microscopy adaptive tutorials. These improved learning outcomes for students in Medicine and Medical Science at UNSW and beyond. He led the Scientia Education Academy in the development of an ePortfolio to enable educators at UNSW to curate and showcase their teaching achievements. He is internationally recognised for research in medical education, focusing on eLearning, assessment and feedback.
